HISTORY: Ludovicus Nonnius ( Antwerp , 1553 - there, 1645 ) is the Latin name of Luis Nuňez , a Belgian doctor of Portuguese descent who is considered the founder of medical dietetics . He was one of the doctors of Peter Paul Rubens , who painted a portrait of him in 1627. As a humanist in the Renaissance, Nonnius excelled in more than one discipline and wrote medical, geographic and historical works, and books on Greek and Roman coins. His most influential work is the four-part Diaeteticon from 1627, the first systematic study of foods from a medical-hygienic perspective.
