HISTORY: The fact that we shouldn’t view “Old Man” as a commissioned portrait, with its attendant patron demanding a focus on likeness or dress, is crucial here. Instead, it is a subjective and touching study of a pensive old man, his face half-lit as if overshadowed by age, and his body overwhelmed by a simple, solid chair. It’s an observation of life, not likeness. To help depict this, Rembrandt allowed himself a greater freedom with the brush than usual. We don’t need to focus on the dress, so it is painted fluidly and rapidly, and we don’t need to see the old man’s precise features, so the face is painted with minimal detail. The right hand is beautifully weighted: we can be sure the sitter is not holding his head but absent-mindedly touching it, as one does in pensive moments.
